The 3 Things I Told My Social Worker Friend She Was Doing WRONG on Video (And Why It Changed Everything)
Let’s play a quick game: Before vs. After.
Today’s guest is Amber Roberts, Licensed Counselor, Social Worker, and founder of Empowering Girls to Overcome (EGO).
She’s building her private practice and needed to record a video explaining why she deserves grant funding.
She sent me her first attempt and said:
“...this is take number 99.” 😩
And immediately, I knew exactly what was happening.
Here’s what I saw:
It felt like she was reading—even though she had memorized it
The nerves kicked in when she forgot parts (I’ve been there—live TV will humble you QUICK 😅)
Her posture and energy felt unsure
The lighting was working against her, not for her
So I called her right away. And I told her:
Get your lighting together—face the window, don’t fight it
Speak like the expert you ARE (over a decade in this work!)
Smile. You earned this moment
Stop performing… and just talk
Then… BOOM.
She said:
“Okay… this was after 50 million takes.” 😂
But look at the difference:
Confident
Clear
Relaxed
Connected
EASY to watch
Same person. Same message. Different delivery. And THAT is the difference between content that gets skipped…and content that gets results.
Let’s give her a 10/10 👏🏾
I’m so proud of her for pushing through and showing up with confidence. This is what I tell my clients all the time:
“It’s not that you don’t know what to say…It’s that you don’t know how to say it on camera.”
And that’s where I come in. If you’ve ever recorded something 10… 20… 50 times and still thought, “Why doesn’t this feel right?”
Yeah. We need to fix that. Amber is a real testament to how this works. Media training might need to be your next move.
